Colorado’s Ultra-Low NOx Furnace Requirement

Colorado House Bill 23-1161 took effect January 1, 2026, requiring all newly manufactured gas furnaces sold or installed in Colorado to meet Ultra-Low NOx (ULN) emissions standards or carry Energy Star certification. ULN furnaces use advanced combustion technology that reduces nitrogen oxide emissions, which contribute to smog and respiratory health concerns.

This law applies only when new equipment is purchased and installed. Existing furnaces aren’t required to be replaced. That said, equipment costs for ULN-compliant models are generally higher than pre-regulation standard furnaces due to the advanced burner technology involved. Homeowners with furnaces 15 or more years old may benefit from consulting with an HVAC professional now, while there’s time to compare options carefully rather than making a rushed decision after an unexpected breakdown.
